Lost Crown or Filling? What You Need to Do

It can leave you feeling worried about your tooth and what steps to take next. Don't panic! This situation is common, and knowing how to react can protect your tooth and ensure a smooth recovery. Think of it like this: your dental crown or dental filling is like a shield for your tooth. When that shield is gone, your tooth is vulnerable.

Understanding the Importance of Restorations

Dental fillings and dental crowns are key parts of restoration dentistry. They help repair teeth damaged by decay, injury, or wear and tear. A dental filling typically repairs a small cavity, while a dental crown covers the entire visible part of the tooth, providing more extensive protection. Both types of restorations are custom-made to fit your tooth perfectly, restoring its shape, function, and appearance. When one of these restorations comes loose or falls out, prompt action is important.

Immediate Steps to Take

First, gently rinse your mouth with warm water. This will help remove any debris and soothe the area. If you lost a dental filling, there might be some sensitivity to temperature changes. Avoid eating or drinking anything extremely hot or cold. If you lost a dental crown and still have it, carefully clean the crown. You might be able to temporarily reattach it using over-the-counter dental cement, which can be found at most drugstores. Follow the instructions on the cement packaging precisely. This is only a temporary fix, but it can protect the underlying tooth until you can see your dentist.

Pain Management

Some discomfort is normal after losing a dental crown or dental filling. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage any pain or sensitivity. If the exposed tooth has sharp edges that are irritating your tongue or cheek, try covering them with dental wax, which is also available at most drugstores.

Why See a Dentist Promptly?

Even if you manage to temporarily reattach your dental crown or the pain is minimal, it is vital to schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Leaving the tooth unprotected can lead to several problems. The exposed tooth structure is more susceptible to bacteria and decay. It can also become more sensitive to temperature and pressure. Delaying treatment can also cause the surrounding teeth to shift, affecting your bite and potentially requiring more extensive dental work in the future.

Maintaining Good Oral Care

While waiting for your dental appointment, continue practicing good oral care. Brush gently around the affected area and floss carefully to remove any food particles. Avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where the restoration is missing to prevent further damage or discomfort.

Long-Term Solutions

Your dentist will evaluate the situation and determine the best course of action. If you lost a dental filling, they will likely place a new one. If you lost a dental crown, they may be able to re-cement the original crown if it's in good condition. If not, they will take impressions to create a new dental crown that fits perfectly and protects your tooth for years to come. Proper oral care, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, is essential for maintaining the health and longevity of your dental restorations.
