Your teeth connect to your jawbone through your gums, and the gum tissue acts like a framework that gives your teeth structure and support. Your gums also contain blood vessels that support your healthy teeth. Because your gums are so important, should you get them professionally cleaned? Here are the details you need for your oral hygiene.

About Your Gums

All of your gums are made from soft tissue. Healthy gum tissue covers your tooth up to the crown and protects your sensitive tooth roots from damage or decay. Gums have a lot of blood vessels, which help to keep your teeth healthy.

However, if you have gums that are infected with bacteria due to periodontal disease, they can begin to shrink back from your teeth, which leaves them unprotected and more susceptible to infections. Tooth infections, if they are not treated, will eventually lead to both infection and the loss of a tooth.

Proper Dental Hygiene

While brushing your teeth twice a day, remember to take care of your gums as well. You do not have to brush the entire surface of your gums, but you do need to brush your gums at the gumline and also floss between your teeth. Flossing helps your gum tissue get rid of trapped food particles so they remain healthy.

If you notice your gums bleed when brushing or flossing, you need to make an appointment with our dentist. You may have the beginning stages of periodontal disease, an infection of your gums. If you do not take care of your gums, you can lose gum tissue as well as your teeth.
