I Am Having Problems With One of My Teeth. Should I See a Specialist?

Dental pain that will be managed by The Center for Esthetic Dentistry in Grants Pass, ORYour teeth are an amazing part of your body, but even they can have issues from time to time. You want your teeth to perform as well as possible, which means when one of them is giving you a lot of trouble, you may want to consult someone else. Should you go to a dental specialist? Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Why Do Some Dentists Have Specialties?

Your general practitioner chose to specialize in a particular field of medicine. Dentists can also choose to specialize in a particular area of dentistry. Both doctors and dentists go to a medical school or dental school for four years, and then some doctors and dentists go on for additional training in a specialty area. For example, doctors could choose to specialize in one organ system, such as the cardiovascular system, which means your cardiologist has years of training in diseases and other issues with the heart. Dentists can choose to go into practice after they graduate from dental school in general dentistry, or they can continue into an area of specialization, such as periodontics, orthodontics, or prosthodontics.

When Your Tooth Is the Trouble

If you are having problems with a particular tooth, your first stop should be our dentist. Your regular dentist knows your teeth as well as you do because they have been looking at your teeth for years or even decades. After our dentist examines your troublesome tooth, they can advise you on how best to move forward. For example, if you have one tooth that has been infected for a while, and no amount of medication or procedures seem to be working, you may want to ask your dentist about visiting a specialist for tooth infections and root canals called an endodontist. What if you experienced trauma to the mouth and lost a couple of teeth? Your dentist may recommend a prosthodontist who does dental implants.

When you need additional help with your teeth or gums, start with our dentist. That way, you will be able to start smiling again as soon as possible. If you are having a tooth issue, why not reach out today to set up an appointment with our dentist?
