Teething is an important milestone in the development of your baby. However, the teething process can be unpleasant and often causes discomfort. Some babies experience bleeding and sore gums as their first teeth emerge. Here are some dos and donts to help you soothe your teething baby.
Massage Their Gums
Applying gentle pressure on babies gums is an effective way to alleviate their discomfort while teething. Use your finger to apply slight pressure on their gums and observe how they respond. Just ensure your hands are clean before sticking your finger inside their mouth. For better pain relief, you can dip your finger in water before massaging the gums.
Do Not Let Them Chew on Hard Objects
It is not uncommon for parents to give their teething babies hard foods such as corn on the cob or chicken wings. However, giving your teething child objects with sharp edges can injure their gums. It also increases their risk of choking.
Apply a Cold Washcloth
While cold compresses are effective for pain relief in adults, they can also help alleviate the discomfort your baby feels when teething. Wrap an ice cube in a clean washcloth and gently place it on their cheek. Avoid applying the cold washcloth directly on their gums, as it will be too cold for them.
Offer a Cold Teething Toy or Refrigerated Pacifier
Teething toys made from silicone or BPA-free plastic are great for remedying pain relief in teething babies. Put the toy in a refrigerator to cool before offering it to your toddler. Alternatively, you can give your toddler a chilled pacifier to suck on. Doing so does keep your little one entertained while soothing their sore gums.
